New York – Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has asserted that Nepal firmly believes countries responsible for carbon emissions should compensate those that do not contribute to carbon emissions.

Prime Minister Oli, who is leading the Nepali delegation to the 79th General Assembly of the United Nations in New York, made this statement during his address as the keynote speaker at the Parliamentarians for Fossil Fuel Free event on Saturday afternoon, local time.

In his speech, Prime Minister Oli highlighted that Nepal has made zero contributions to carbon emissions and has played a role in mitigating the effects of climate change. He emphasized that, since Nepal’s Everest and other mountains are melting due to carbon emissions from developed countries, compensation should be provided to the affected communities.

Prime Minister Oli also stressed that developed nations, in line with the Paris Agreement, should increase financial investments in climate adaptation for the future, stating, “Our future is beautiful because we are investing in it.”

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Oli met with United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres at the United Nations Building today.

The delegation accompanying Prime Minister Oli includes First Lady Radhika Shakya, Foreign Minister Dr. Arju Rana Deuba, the Prime Minister’s Chief Advisor Bishnu Prasad Rimal, Foreign Ministry Secretary Seva Lamsal, the Prime Minister’s personal physician Dr. Divya Singh, Principal Private Secretary Rajesh Bajracharya, Foreign Ministry Joint Secretary Amrit Kumar Rai, Etiquette Commissioner Bishnu Prasad Gautam, among others.
