Kathmandu– Nepal is gearing up to host the 6th Asian Population Conference (APC) from November 27-30, aiming to contribute to policy-making related to Nepal’s changing demographic structure. Organizers anticipate that the event will provide Nepal with insights from other Asian nations to guide its policy direction.

The conference, organized by the Central Department of Population Studies (CDPS) at Tribhuvan University, has established an advisory committee comprising ministers and secretaries from the Ministry of Health and Population to ensure its success.

Participation and Registration Status

The conference expects the participation of approximately 700 population experts from across Asia. According to Padya Khatiwada, the conference’s member secretary, 500 participants have already registered, including 270 from Nepal, 170 from South Asia, and 100 from other Asian regions.

Budget and Support

With an estimated budget of NPR 30 million, the event is supported by the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), the International Organization for Migration (IOM), and various ministries of the Nepal government.

Key Highlights

The conference will feature discussions on five major topics, including a special session on Nepal’s current demographic scenario. Seventeen thematic papers will be presented, and Nepal’s National Statistics Office (NSO) will share findings from the 2021 Census.

Political Endorsement and Guests

Prime Minister K.P. Sharma Oli will inaugurate the conference, with former Prime Ministers Sher Bahadur Deuba and Pushpa Kamal Dahal invited as special guests. Deputy speakers from all seven provinces will attend the opening ceremony, symbolizing a commitment to women’s empowerment.

Expectations and Vision

Prof. Dr. Yogendra Bahadur Gurung, head of CDPS, expressed hope that the conference will offer a fresh perspective on population management and policymaking in Nepal. Hari Prasad Mainali, Secretary at the Ministry of Health and Population, emphasized the event as a critical opportunity for advancing policy initiatives.

Experts from various countries will share experiences and propose solutions to address Nepal’s evolving demographic challenges, making this event a pivotal moment for the nation’s population management strategies.
