The Youngest Deputy Director Demonstrating Maturity in the Insurance Sector

Banking News – In most fields, men still outnumber women in leadership positions. Historically, patriarchal norms restricted women’s access to education, limiting their career opportunities. However, times are changing. Women are now stepping into leadership roles across various sectors, including insurance.

One such name in the list of young professionals achieving high-ranking positions at an early age is Pushpa Kunwar, Deputy Director at the Nepal Insurance Authority. Born and raised in Kathmandu, Pushpa currently plays a key role in shaping Nepal’s insurance landscape.

A Disciplined Upbringing and a Shift in Career Goals

Growing up in a disciplined environment, Pushpa’s father served in the army, which influenced her early interest in joining the military. She completed her higher education at Army School, initially aspiring to become a soldier. However, due to recruitment freezes during the conflict period, she shifted her focus to academics, eventually earning a Master’s in International Management.

While completing her fifth semester, recruitment reopened for the army, but she chose to continue her studies instead. During her academic journey, she actively participated in various professional opportunities, which led her to secure a position at Agricultural Development Bank at the start of her career. After gaining experience in banking, she transitioned to the insurance sector, joining the Nepal Insurance Authority.

“Women Can Hold High Positions”

During her time in banking, she noticed a pattern—clients often addressed male employees with greater respect while referring to female employees as “sisters” or “daughters.” This made her realize that society still struggles to see women in authoritative roles. However, within the financial sector itself, she received encouragement and support.

“In the insurance sector, I was welcomed and supported. Despite being young, I never faced challenges solely because of my age or gender. When given a conducive environment, women can thrive in any field,” she shares.

“Fewer Women in Insurance Compared to Banking”

Drawing from her experience in both banking and insurance, Pushpa highlights that insurance presents more challenges than banking. “However, as one gains experience, the field becomes more rewarding,” she explains. She also points out the lack of structured training programs in insurance compared to banking, which has slowed the sector’s overall development.

“Insurance Has Given Me an Identity”

Pushpa initially never imagined reaching a leadership role in the insurance sector. Having once aspired to join the army, she now realizes that insurance has shaped her identity and career in unexpected yet fulfilling ways.

Expressing her satisfaction with her journey, she states, “I have gained extensive knowledge and skills in this field.” She acknowledges that working in insurance has enhanced her financial expertise and given her an opportunity to contribute meaningfully. To further expand her knowledge, Pushpa actively participates in international forums on insurance and finance.

As an avid reader, she enjoys novels in her spare time and strongly believes in the multi-talented nature of women. “Women’s participation in all sectors is crucial for national development. Their ability to multitask is an asset to society,” she emphasizes.
