Ambassador Kristen: Possibility of Increasing Danish Investment in Nepal

KathmanduNon-resident Ambassador of Denmark to Nepal, Rasmus Abildgaard Kristen, has expressed strong commitment to deepening Denmark–Nepal relations and expanding bilateral cooperation at the grassroots level. During his three-day official visit to Nepal, Ambassador Kristen presented his credentials to President Ram Chandra Paudel.

He remarked that Denmark has maintained a longstanding friendship with Nepal and sees ample opportunities for future collaboration in key areas such as information technology, education, healthcare, and particularly climate change mitigation. The Danish government, he said, is positively considering increasing investments in these sectors.

Ambassador Kristen emphasized Nepal’s rich potential in tourism, citing its natural beauty, cultural diversity, and unique lifestyle. He noted that Nepal could make significant strides in economic development through tourism. A large number of Danish tourists already visit Nepal for mountaineering and trekking, and he intends to promote Nepal more actively among Danish citizens.

Highlighting Denmark’s serious concern over the effects of climate change on Nepal’s Himalayan region and glacial lakes, the ambassador said Denmark is open to collaborative solutions with Nepal on this front.

He stressed that bilateral ties could be further strengthened, especially in the areas of IT, technology transfer, and renewable energy, where Denmark sees great investment potential. He expressed interest in mobilizing Danish private investors in partnership with Nepal’s private sector.

During his visit, Ambassador Kristen also held high-level discussions with senior officials at Nepal’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs to explore further diplomatic initiatives for expanding bilateral relations.

He met with officials of the Himalayan Rescue Association, praising their role in safeguarding trekkers and guides in high-altitude expeditions. Kristen also visited the Danish Consulate Office in Kathmandu, where he shared thoughts on enhancing the effectiveness of Nepal–Denmark relations in the coming days.

Meanwhile, Honorary Danish Consul Hari Dharel reiterated his commitment to strengthening people-to-people ties and expanding tourism-driven cooperation between the two countries. While Nepal opened its residential embassy in Copenhagen in 2007, Denmark has been managing its diplomatic presence in Nepal through its embassy in New Delhi since 2017, after closing its Kathmandu office.
