Banking News – Home Minister Sudhan Gurung has said that no one should assume the role of a judge and declare someone guilty merely because a complaint has been filed against them. He said publicly defaming individuals without facts and evidence is inappropriate and has drawn serious attention from the Ministry of Home Affairs.

Speaking at a meeting of the House of Representatives’ Law, Justice and Human Rights Committee on Friday, Shrawan 29, Minister Gurung expressed dissatisfaction with the conduct displayed two days earlier at a meeting of the Public Accounts Committee toward the Home Secretary, Home Ministry officials and Nepal Police Inspector General (IGP).

Although he was not present at the meeting, Gurung said the manner in which the issues were presented was inappropriate.

“We cannot become judges based solely on complaints. Anyone can make an allegation, but until it is proven, no one can be declared guilty or subjected to character assassination. This is not right; this is not good,” Gurung said.

He stressed that portraying an individual as guilty before an allegation is proven is inconsistent with democratic practices and parliamentary decorum.

At the Public Accounts Committee meeting on Wednesday, Shrawan 27, Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) lawmaker Khagendra Sunar had raised questions over alleged irregularities in the procurement of police uniforms, rations and other logistical supplies. Sunar had also called for the immediate dismissal of the Home Secretary and the Inspector General of Police.

Responding to the issue, Home Minister Gurung claimed that officials under the Home Administration and the police leadership have been working in line with the government’s policies and objectives.

“Our employees have been working diligently, and I am a direct witness to that. Along with the IGP, officials of the security agencies have been working day and night in accordance with the government’s spirit,” he said.

Gurung emphasized that allegations should be investigated on the basis of facts and evidence and that it is inappropriate to reach conclusions based solely on accusations. He also called on parliamentary committees to perform their responsibilities in a responsible, evidence-based and factual manner.
