Banking News – After the devastating flood and landslides in Nepal, a large natural barrier lake has formed near the Nepal-China border at the confluence of two rivers, and the risk of it bursting within the next three days is high, according to China’s Ministry of Water Resources.
According to China’s state television CCTV and Global Times, approximately 2 million cubic meters of water had accumulated in the lake near the confluence of Nepal’s Chochen Khola and Purepu Tsangpo River by Thursday morning. The ministry stated that as the lake surface fills, water has already begun to overflow.

Chinese officials estimate that an additional 3 million cubic meters of water will accumulate in the lake within the next three days. Warning has been issued that if the water volume increases rapidly, the natural dam could collapse, triggering a sudden massive flood, making the risk of the lake bursting high.
Considering the risk, China’s Ministry of Water Resources has stated that it is continuously monitoring the lake’s condition. Computer simulations and technical analysis are also being conducted to assess the potential impact of flooding if the lake bursts. The ministry has informed that necessary preparations for emergency rescue and risk mitigation have been intensified.
Meanwhile, the devastating debris-laden landslide originating from the Nepali side of the Nepal-China border has also caused damage to areas around the Kyirong (Kerung) border point in China’s southwestern Xizang (Tibet) Autonomous Region. Following this, the Chinese side has intensified rescue and relief efforts by mobilizing various agencies.
The People’s Liberation Army of China, emergency rescue teams, engineering groups, telecommunications service providers, and relief organizations are deploying personnel, aircraft, equipment, and relief materials to the affected areas. Chinese media have reported that rescue and relief operations are being conducted amid challenging geographical conditions, continuous rainfall, and potential risks of further natural disasters.
