Kathmandu — Nepal’s capital market is showing encouraging signs of moving toward greater depth, maturity and inclusiveness, with the ongoing reform discussions increasingly focusing beyond the performance of the Nepal Stock Exchange (NEPSE) index.

Stakeholders have highlighted the growing focus on developing better financial products, strengthening market institutions, increasing investor participation, improving market infrastructure and adopting more modern business practices.

However, industry observers have stressed that policy announcements alone will not be sufficient to bring meaningful transformation to Nepal’s capital market. Effective implementation, clear regulatory frameworks, realistic timelines and coordination among regulators and market participants will be crucial to ensuring that proposed reforms translate into tangible improvements.

According to market stakeholders, while challenges are expected and some reforms may require adjustments during implementation, the overall direction of the capital market reforms remains encouraging.

A stronger capital market, they said, should not be measured solely by higher trading turnover or an increase in the NEPSE index. Rather, its strength should be reflected in the creation of more avenues for businesses to raise capital and the development of credible and diversified investment opportunities for the public.

If a significant portion of the proposed reforms is implemented effectively, Nepal’s capital market could undergo substantial changes over the coming years, stakeholders believe.

Although there remains a long way to go, the current direction of reform has provided grounds for cautious optimism about the future of Nepal’s capital market.
