Banking News – Targeting the Nepali community in Portugal, the office of the Non-Resident Nepali Association (NRNA) National Coordination Council Portugal is set to come into operation in the capital Lisbon from October 4.
According to data from Portugal’s National Statistics Institute (INE), the number of Nepali citizens in Portugal reached 56,866 in 2025. This is the fifth-largest number among immigrants in Portugal. Among Nepalis, there are 38,335 males and 18,531 females. It has been reported that Nepalis who have already acquired Portuguese citizenship are not included in this data.

Data shows that the number of Nepalis in Portugal increased by 136.8 percent in the last four years. While there were 24,013 Nepalis in 2021, the number reached 56,866 by 2025. In just four years, 32,853 Nepalis have been added.
In 2025, after 574,195 from Brazil, 103,140 from Angola, 93,683 from India, and 76,099 from Cape Verde, the number of Nepalis is the next highest. After that are citizens of Bangladesh, Guinea-Bissau, Ukraine, Sao Tome and Principe, Pakistan, and others.
In 2025, the total number of immigrants in Portugal was 1,597,539, of which Nepalis accounted for 3.55 percent. In 2021, Nepalis accounted for 3.2 percent of total immigrants.
Along with the increase in the number of Nepalis, the institutional presence of Nepali organizations in Portugal and the diplomatic activity of the Government of Nepal have also expanded. The Government of Nepal had initiated efforts to establish a Nepali embassy in Portugal in 2080 BS. In Mangsir of the same year, Portugal agreed to open a Nepali embassy in Lisbon. After that, a Nepali embassy was established in Lisbon in 2081 BS. The government had appointed Prakash Mani Poudel as Nepal’s Ambassador to Portugal.
Meanwhile, Portugal has also moved forward with the process of expanding its diplomatic presence in Nepal. Portugal had requested the Government of Nepal for consent to establish a consular office in Kathmandu, and the Cabinet decided on Shrawan 26, 2083, to grant consent to open a consular office. After that, it has been reported that Portugal has requested permission to establish a consulate general, a level higher than a consular office.
Keeping in mind this growing Nepali population, NRNA Portugal is preparing to bring its office into operation in Lisbon. According to the Association, the Nepali community will be able to directly receive necessary information, services, support, and counseling from the office.
The office will be operated at Avenida Defensores de Chaves No. 4, 1000-109 Lisbon. It has been reported that the office is located in front of SIC.
NRNA Portugal has stated that it has also brought an official website into operation. Through the website, the Nepali community will be able to receive the Association’s official notices, services, support, programs, and necessary information. The Association has stated that arrangements have been made to send queries and service and support-related requests through the website as well.
In a situation where the Nepali community in Portugal is increasing rapidly, the Association expects that the operation of the office will provide easy access to services and information for Nepalis there. Sujan Lama Moktan, President of NRNA Portugal, and Suraj Bhandari, Secretary, have urged the entire Nepali community in Portugal to utilize the services available through the office and website.
