Kathmandu – Two nurses have been suspended after the death of a patient being treated at BP Koirala Memorial Cancer Hospital due to an overdose of chemo (medicine used to destroy cancer cells). Two nurses have been suspended and 23 people including two doctors have been warned.
A patient who came to the hospital for treatment died after being given ten times more chemotherapy than it should have been. The information officer of the hospital, Grihinarayan Mahato, said that the patient died after 34 milligrams of chemo was given to the patient.
According to the information provided by the hospital, 50-year-old Bhaktaraj Gurung of Dordi in Lamjung was being treated for skin cancer on his leg. Mahato said that Gurung died after giving more chemo than necessary during the treatment. According to him, after giving the same amount of chemo three times in the medical ward, the patient’s body could not handle the amount and died on the night of June 13th.
The skin cancer of the leg was “Melano” and the surgery was performed. After the disease spread and reached the groin under the leg and a lump was seen, the cancer was removed by doing a ‘biopsy’. After that, chemo was started to the patient”, he said. After the negligence in the treatment of the patient, the hospital administration has asked for an explanation from 23 nurses including two doctors. According to information officer Mahato, nurses Prabha Tamang and Akriti Shrestha have been suspended.
The hospital formed an investigation committee consisting of Deputy Director Dr Umesh Nepal, Head of Medical Oncology Department Dr Gurusharan Shah and Head of Nursing Anita Devkota. Mahato informed that the committee submitted its report on July 3. The executive director of the hospital, Dr. Shivji Paudel, said that after the study team submitted its report, two people were suspended and 23 people were asked to clarify. He informed that necessary action will be taken along with this.
Paudel said, “We will take necessary action because of negligence in work.” We will arrange for regular monitoring to prevent such negligence in the future.
