Banking News – Gham Power Nepal organized a special press meet on September 4 to unveil Nepal’s first Soluble Lead-Flow Battery (SLFB), an emerging energy storage technology being developed and demonstrated for Nepal. Professor Richard Wills from the University of Southampton provided information to journalists and energy sector representatives through a live demonstration, explaining how the battery works and how it is manufactured.
The core principle of SLFB is simple: giving new life to lead recovered from used batteries as the primary material for energy storage, serving as an option for storing energy generated from solar and hydropower. As Nepal’s renewable energy capacity continues to grow, the need for reliable storage also increases, and SLFB is expected to bridge this gap in renewable energy integration and long-term stationary energy storage.

During the demonstration, Professor Wills clearly explained how the battery charges and discharges – how lead accumulates and removes from the electrodes – and participants had the opportunity to closely observe the flow battery technology and ask direct questions to the researchers.
The development of SLFB technology is being carried out in collaboration between Gham Power, the University of Southampton, Solid Energy, and Swanbarton, bringing together international research expertise and local knowledge to adapt the technology to Nepal’s conditions.
As Nepal’s ambition toward the clean energy sector grows, SLFB provides an indigenous solution based on recycled materials that aligns with Nepal’s own resources and needs. The program gave journalists, energy sector representatives, and clean energy enthusiasts the opportunity to closely observe the technology and discuss Nepal’s energy storage future.
