KATHMANDU – The Department of Commerce, Supplies, and Consumer Protection has imposed a fine of Rs 300,000 on Jimbu Thakali, a restaurant located in Shanti Nagar, Kathmandu, for selling mineral water at more than double the marked price.
Following complaints that the restaurant was charging up to Rs 100 for a bottle of water marked at Rs 35, Director General Rajan Paudel led a surprise inspection. The investigation confirmed the overpricing, leading to the fine under the Consumer Protection Act 2018, along with a warning that further violations would result in the restaurant being sealed.
Director General Paudel emphasized that the department has intensified market monitoring, particularly during the festive season, to prevent consumer exploitation. Seven teams are actively conducting inspections across the country, including in the Kathmandu Valley, in collaboration with local authorities.
