Kathmandu – The Kathmandu Metropolitan City has arranged for flower sales at 46 locations this year to celebrate the festivals of Deepawali, Nepal Sambat, and Chhath. Mayor Balen Shah announced on social media that the metropolitan office has designated suitable locations to facilitate the sale of domestically produced flowers.
The municipality has also imposed a ban on the sale of plastic flowers and decorative materials, emphasizing the promotion of local flower trade. All consumers are encouraged to purchase local flowers to support Nepali farmers. “We request traders not to sell plastic flowers and other decorative items. If anyone is found selling them secretly, action will be taken as per existing laws,” Mayor Shah stated.
Last year, during the Tihar festival, the municipality halted street flower sales, which led to complaints from many farmers who could not sell their flowers due to the lack of designated sales points. Some farmers even discarded flowers on the street. The municipality had previously arranged sales locations at Bhaktapur, Thamel, and other areas. Learning from last year’s experience, Mayor Shah mentioned that efforts will be made this year to make it easier for flower sellers. Arrangements have been made at malls, parks, party venues, and community centers for sales.
