“Prasai owes over NPR 2 billion to four banks.”

Kathmandu – The petition filed by social activist and medical entrepreneur Durga Prasai against several banks has been dismissed by the court. A bench comprising Chief Justice Bipul Neupane and Justice Kaji Bahadur Rai rejected the petition on Tuesday.

With the dismissal, the banks to which Prasai owes loans can now proceed with recovery. Prasai had filed the petition, demanding an injunction, at the Ilam bench of the High Court Biratnagar after banks issued notices for repayment of loans.

The petition, filed by Tikaram Adhikari on behalf of Prasai, named four banks, including Kumari Bank’s Birtamod branch. Prasai had borrowed over NPR 2 billion from these banks to operate the Purvanchal Cancer Hospital.

Prasai has been in police custody since December 4 following controversial statements against former Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli. Initially, he was released on NPR 40,000 bail under the Electronic Transactions Act 2063. However, further investigations are ongoing regarding allegations of organized crime and illicit financial gains.
