Government Policy Guides Fertilizer Distribution, Says Salt Trading Corporation

Banking News – Salt Trading Corporation has said it is distributing chemical fertilizers in accordance with the government’s policy, ensuring farmers receive subsidized fertilizer during the peak paddy plantation season.

The corporation’s Chitwan branch reported that, in the current fiscal year 2025/26, it has distributed 35,838 bags of urea, 44,944 bags of DAP, and 4,943 bags of potash fertilizer across the district. At present, 9,200 bags of urea and 1,000 bags of DAP are being sold, while stocks of 7,802 bags of urea, 2,866 bags of DAP, and 12,425 bags of potash remain available.

The subsidized prices fixed by the government are Rs. 847 per 50 kg bag of urea, Rs. 2,297 per bag of DAP, and Rs. 1,697 per bag of potash.

Branch Chief Buddhi Binod Dahal said fertilizers are being distributed through authorized dealers at government-approved subsidized rates based on recommendations from local governments. He added that the corporation has been fulfilling its responsibility of ensuring timely fertilizer availability despite logistical challenges.

To improve transparency, Salt Trading is preparing to require all registered dealers to record fertilizer sales through the Farmer Management System (FMS) software, allowing authorities to track how much fertilizer each farmer purchases. Technical training has already been provided to dealers in coordination with the Chief District Officer, the Agriculture Knowledge Centre, and local governments.

Dahal stated that Salt Trading is responsible for supplying around 30 percent of Nepal’s total chemical fertilizer demand and has been carrying out its mandate responsibly. He noted that demand for DAP briefly surged during the paddy planting season, while urea continues to account for the highest consumption.

In the previous fiscal year, the Chitwan branch distributed 42,201 bags of urea, 21,584 bags of DAP, and 1,842 bags of potash.
