“Women Need a Supportive Work Environment”

Banking News – Geeta Basnet, born and raised in Chuchepati in a humble family, completed her SLC from Pashupati Mitra Secondary School and graduated in Commerce from Kanya Campus, Dillibazar. Before entering the insurance industry in 2010, she spent seven years gaining experience at a stock broker company.

Currently serving as the Head of Underwriting and Policy Servicing at Suryajyoti Life Insurance, Geeta once aspired to become a teacher in her early years. She did briefly pursue teaching, but her life took a different turn when she switched careers and entered the insurance sector in 2010. Over the last decade and a half, she has made her mark in the industry. Reflecting on her journey, Geeta believes, “In life, whatever circumstances arise, patience and honesty are essential.”

From Stock Broker to Insurance

Geeta began her career at Suryajyoti Life Insurance in 2010. After spending several years at stock brokerage companies with limited salaries and benefits, she transitioned to the insurance industry. Working in insurance, she feels the sector has given her valuable guidance in her life. “In the insurance field, I found an environment where I could learn a lot. Many people encouraged me along the way, and my family has also been a strong support in helping me reach where I am today,” she shares.

With the increasing participation of women in various sectors, Geeta believes women are learning to adapt and professionalize in their roles. She explains, “For women who work in the field, it’s often challenging. They must manage everything, both in their professional lives and at home. Balancing both is incredibly hard work.”

In recent times, more and more women have prioritized their careers and are excelling. Geeta notes that the perception of women working in the insurance sector has improved. “Earlier, people looked at jobs in banking with higher regard, but now women working in insurance are receiving positive responses,” she adds.

Experience is Essential in Life

Having worked for 16 years in the insurance industry, Geeta believes in gaining practical experience rather than seeking high positions immediately. She is determined to continue growing within the sector, specifically in underwriting, where she has gained significant expertise. She credits her time at Suryajyoti Life Insurance for allowing her to develop professionally. “I still want to learn more and expand my knowledge in the insurance sector,” she says.

Geeta recognizes that the path to personal and professional growth is often filled with ups and downs.

“Women Must Have a Supportive Work Environment”

Geeta emphasizes that while women need to empower themselves, companies must also provide a supportive environment for them to thrive. “For women, having a good work environment is key. The company plays an important role in this,” she says. In her view, being capable of performing well in any job requires a supportive work atmosphere, both at home and at work.

“Some tasks might seem small, but it’s important that everyone supports each other. It can be difficult for a woman to manage household chores, so a comfortable environment at home and work is necessary,” Geeta concludes.
