Banking News — Nepal secured a profit of Rs 4.57 billion from electricity trade during Fiscal Year 2024/25, according to the Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA).
On the occasion of NEA’s 40th anniversary, Executive Director Hitendra Dev Shakya announced that electricity exports to India generated Rs 17.47 billion in revenue, while imports worth Rs 12.9 billion reduced the net earnings.
Shakya revealed that Nepal has received approval from the Government of India to export 1,010 megawatts of electricity generated from 30 hydropower plants. In a notable milestone, Nepal also began exporting 40 megawatts of electricity to Bangladesh last fiscal year.
To strengthen regional power trade, NEA is expediting the construction of key cross-border transmission lines. These include the 400 kV Inaruwa–New Purnia and Dodhara (Lamki)–Bareilly lines with India, and the 220 kV Chilime–Rasuwagadhi–Kerung line with China.
“These projects are vital for realizing Nepal’s goal of exporting 15,000 megawatts of electricity by 2025, while also fulfilling the commitment to import 10,000 megawatts from India over the next decade,” Shakya stated.
