Tourists Stranded in Ghandruk After Modi Khola Flood Washes Away Road

Banking News – Hundreds of tourists have been stranded in Ghandruk after a flood in the Modi Khola River on Sunday washed away a section of the paved road leading to the popular tourist destination. The flood swept away the road near Syaulibazar, on the border of Wards 8 and 10 of Annapurna Rural Municipality in Kaski, forcing the closure of the Nayapul–Birethanti–Ghandruk road.

The flooding was triggered after the Kimrung Khola in Ward 11 of Annapurna Rural Municipality became blocked, causing the Modi Khola to overflow and sever the road connection to Ghandruk, one of Nepal’s major rural tourism destinations.

According to Krishna Gurung, Treasurer of the Ghandruk Tourism Entrepreneurs Committee, around 300 tourists who had traveled to Ghandruk to spend the three-day holiday are currently stranded due to the road damage. While trekking routes remain open, tourists who traveled by vehicle have been unable to leave the area.

The rural municipality said repair work is underway on an alternative unpaved route connecting Ghandruk–Khulibang–Mohariya–Tamu–Birethanti, allowing motorcycles and scooters to pass once completed.

Annapurna Rural Municipality Chairperson Bishnu Bahadur KC said local authorities and technical teams have reached Syaulibazar to restore road access after tourists visiting Ghandruk and those trekking to the Annapurna Base Camp (ABC) were affected.

Ghandruk, located in Ward 11 of Annapurna Rural Municipality, serves as the gateway to the Annapurna Base Camp (ABC) Trek and the Ghorepani–Poon Hill Trek, making the road disruption particularly significant for the tourism sector.
