Banking News – Former Deputy Prime Minister Top Bahadur Rayamajhi, who is serving a jail sentence in the fake Bhutanese refugee case, is set to be released from jail on Kartik 26. His path to release has opened after a 25 percent remission was granted to his prison sentence in accordance with the legal provision available to senior citizens upon completing 65 years of age.

Rayamajhi had filed an application at the Kathmandu District Court seeking remission in his prison sentence as per the legal provision related to senior citizens. Based on that application, the court revised his prison term and sent a new prisoner record (kaidipurcha) to the Dillibazar Prison Office. Baburaam Aryal, Jailer of Dillibazar Prison, confirmed that the revised prisoner record has been received from the court. According to him, Rayamajhi will be released on Kartik 26 as per the revised prisoner record.

Rayamajhi will complete 65 years of age on Kartik 25. The legal provision related to senior citizens contains a provision to grant a 25 percent remission in the designated prison sentence to prisoners who have completed 65 years of age. His prison term has been reduced according to this facility.

Rayamajhi was arrested on Baisakh 20, 2080, on charges of involvement in the fake Bhutanese refugee case. The Kathmandu District Court had sentenced him to four years in prison on Asar 30, 2083.

Even though Rayamajhi is being released from prison, the legal process of the case will not be concluded. It has been stated that since the case is pending in the High Court, it will be resolved through the legal process itself. Rayamajhi, who rose through Maoist politics, had held the responsibilities of minister and deputy prime minister at various times. He was continuously elected in the elections of 2064, 2070, 2074, and 2079.
