Rain Likely Across Most Parts of Nepal, Including Kathmandu Valley Today

Banking News – Most parts of Nepal, including the Kathmandu Valley, are likely to witness light to moderate rainfall accompanied by thunder and lightning today as the monsoon system remains active across the country, according to the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology (DHM).

The department has forecast generally cloudy conditions throughout the day in most urban areas of Koshi, Madhesh, Bagmati, Gandaki, Lumbini, Karnali, and Sudurpashchim provinces, with rainfall expected in many locations.

According to the city’s weather forecast issued by the DHM, rainfall is likely during both the daytime and nighttime in most major cities, including the Kathmandu Valley. Moderate rain accompanied by thunder and lightning is expected in Kathmandu, Pokhara, Okhaldhunga, Taplejung, Jiri, and Dadeldhura.

The department has also predicted a 40 percent chance of rainfall in Biratnagar, Dharan, Dhankuta, Bhairahawa, Ghorahi, Birendranagar, Jumla, Dipayal, and Simara. Meanwhile, Janakpur, Nepalgunj, and Jomsom have a 30 percent chance of light rainfall.

In Kathmandu, the maximum temperature is expected to range between 29 and 31 degrees Celsius, while the minimum temperature is forecast between 20 and 22 degrees Celsius. Moderate rainfall with thunder and lightning is likely during both the day and night.

Pokhara is expected to record a maximum temperature of 31 to 33 degrees Celsius, with a 60 percent chance of moderate rainfall throughout the day and night.

The department has urged travelers to exercise caution while traveling on hilly roads, particularly in Okhaldhunga, Taplejung, and Jiri, where continuous rainfall is expected.

In the eastern Tarai, including Biratnagar, Dharan, and Janakpur, thunderstorms and rainfall are likely, although maximum temperatures are expected to remain between 33 and 37 degrees Celsius, allowing hot and humid conditions to persist.

Western Nepal, including Dhangadhi, Nepalgunj, Bhairahawa, and Ghorahi, is also likely to receive light to moderate rainfall. However, maximum temperatures in these areas could reach between 35 and 38 degrees Celsius, resulting in continued heat despite the rain. Light rainfall is also expected during the night in Dhangadhi and Nepalgunj.

In the Himalayan region, including Jumla, Jomsom, and Taplejung, thunderstorms and rainfall are forecast. The department warned that continuous rainfall could increase the risk of landslides, making road travel hazardous in these areas.

According to the DHM, the active monsoon system may bring moderate to heavy rainfall within a short period in some locations, increasing the likelihood of sudden rises in water levels in rivers and streams. The department has advised the public to remain alert to the risks of landslides, debris flows in hilly and mountainous districts, and urban flooding.

Meteorologist Sanjeev Adhikari urged people to avoid open areas, tall trees, electricity poles, and riverbanks during thunderstorms and lightning, and to refrain from unnecessary travel. He also requested the public to regularly follow weather updates and advisories issued by the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology and local authorities.
