Government Spends NPR 33 Billion in a Day as Budget Account Closes; Overall Expenditure Reaches 79% of Target

Banking News – The Government of Nepal closed its budget account for the Fiscal Year 2082/83 after disbursing NPR 33.16 billion in a single day, in accordance with the legal requirement to close government accounts five days before the end of the fiscal year.

According to the Office of the Financial Comptroller General, the government spent a total of NPR 1.565 trillion during the fiscal year, representing 79.69 percent of the total allocated budget.

The government had introduced a NPR 1.964 trillion budget for the current fiscal year, but total expenditure reached only NPR 1.565 trillion, leaving a significant portion of the budget unspent.

Current expenditure recorded the highest utilization rate at 88 percent, reflecting continued spending on salaries, administration, and recurrent government operations.

However, capital expenditure remained weak at just 44 percent, highlighting ongoing challenges in implementing development and infrastructure projects within the fiscal year.

Meanwhile, financial expenditure, which primarily includes debt servicing and financing obligations, reached 90 percent of its allocated budget, making it the best-performing expenditure category.

The latest expenditure figures underscore the government’s continued struggle to improve capital spending despite achieving relatively higher utilization in recurrent and financial expenditures.
