A Russian court has fined Google an astronomical sum of two undecillion roubles a figure represented by a 2 followed by 36 zeroes for restricting access to Russian state media channels on YouTube. This fine, equivalent to an unfathomable $20,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 in US dollars, vastly exceeds Google’s estimated $2 trillion value and even dwarfs the global GDP, which the IMF estimates at $110 trillion.
The penalty has ballooned to this amount because, according to state news agency Tass, it is continuously growing. Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov acknowledged the enormity of the figure, admitting he “cannot even pronounce this number,” but emphasized that Google should address the issue. Google has yet to comment on the matter.
According to Russian media outlet RBC, the fine stems from Google’s restriction of 17 Russian media channels on YouTube, a move that intensified after Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022. In response to sanctions and Western companies exiting Russia, Moscow implemented retaliatory actions, including content restrictions on foreign platforms. By 2022, Google’s Russian subsidiary was declared bankrupt, and the company ceased commercial services like advertising in Russia, though its products remain available.
This massive fine represents a new phase in the ongoing tensions between Russia and Google. Previously, Russia fined Google 21.1 billion roubles (£301 million) for failing to restrict access to “prohibited” content on the Ukraine war.
