Hotel and Tourism Businesses in Nawalpur Recover as Narayangadh–Butwal Road Nears Completion

Banking News – Hotel and tourism businesses in Nepal’s Nawalpur district are beginning to recover as the long-delayed Narayangadh–Butwal Road Expansion Project enters its final phase, raising hopes of renewed economic activity in the region.

For several years, dust, muddy roads, heavy traffic congestion, and hazardous travel conditions caused by the road construction discouraged travelers and tourists from stopping in Nawalpur for meals, rest, or sightseeing, significantly affecting highway-based hotels and restaurants.

With asphalt paving now largely completed, business owners say travel has become smoother and visitor numbers are gradually increasing, bringing customers back to local hotels and tourism establishments.

According to Santosh Rana, President of the Nawalpur Hotel Entrepreneurs’ Association, hotel businesses along the highway suffered severely for nearly five to six years after the road expansion project began.

“Due to dusty and poorly maintained roads, most travelers preferred to cross the difficult section before stopping for food or accommodation, leading to a sharp decline in business,” Rana said.

The association estimates that around 1,100 hotels and tourism-related businesses operate across Nawalpur, many of which were directly or indirectly affected by the prolonged construction work.

Business owners are optimistic that improved road conditions will continue to boost customer traffic and gradually restore the local hospitality industry.

Areas such as Thumsi, Dumkibas, and Daunne, traditionally known as major rest stops for travelers along the highway, are already witnessing increased visitor activity after remaining quiet for an extended period.

Under the Narayangadh–Butwal Road Expansion Project, paving and concrete works in the Nawalpur section have been completed. Authorities are now carrying out finishing works, including road safety installations, lane markings, signboards, guardrails, and other supporting infrastructure.

Local entrepreneurs believe the improved highway will not only increase tourist arrivals but also stimulate transportation, trade, and broader economic activity throughout the district.
